Fireflies and microbes to power our world | Sathesh Raj | TEDxUNINA Federico II

From childhood memories of fireflies to cutting-edge research for space, Sathesh Raj explores how nature’s tiniest lights can inspire the future of sustainable energy. He introduces SMILES, a visionary system that combines solar power with bioluminescent microbes, hydrogen bacteria, and cable bacteria — offering solutions for powering lunar habitats and remote communities on Earth alike. Sathesh Raj is passionate about climate action and space innovation. He has participated in movements like Extinction Rebellion, developed climate solutions using space tech, and led the "Peaks of Paradise" project, uncovering Malaysian forest data through visualization. An alum of British Council’s Future News Worldwide, he is part of Time To Rice, an award-winning research team advancing climate science communication. Currently completing his master’s in Astrobiology, Sathesh recently won third prize in China’s MoonStation2050 Global Innovation Competition for his lunar energy system design. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
