Homeschool vs Industrial School: Lessons from 3 Generations | Shan Ali Sumar | TEDxKivukoni
How much does it really cost to educate a child over their entire life? Why does it take us 21 years to do so?Is there a better way?Find answers to all this and more…These questions come from my personal journey through industrial schooling and home-schooling, spanning three generations, as I explore where our education system stands today. Shan Ali Sumar is an educator, environmentalist, and entrepreneur passionate about sustainability and community empowerment. With over twelve years of experience as a forest school and permaculture teacher, he combines expertise in law, business, and ecology to promote regenerative living. After founding and running a successful flavour house, he shifted focus to education and sustainable development, working across Africa on water irrigation, microgreen farming, and renewable energy projects. Now based in Zanzibar, Shan runs a school and campsite where he teaches science, permaculture, and farming through hands-on, nature-based learning. Believing that soil is the greatest teacher, he inspires learners to live in balance with the earth and face global challenges with creativity and resilience.
