The Broken Forest Files | Mr Arun Shenoy | TEDxSt Agnes College
In his talk, Mr Arun Shenoy shares how a single act of saving a forest from encroachers transformed into a lifelong commitment to forest conservation. He narrates the incident when he was a small part of the team that saved large trees on government land right next to their basecamp from being cut. He believes that this is one of the greatest accomplishments of his life, a story that he can tell till the day he dies. Following the incident, he started to look for an answer to the question burning in his mind, namely how much forest we still have remaining, and the answer troubled him greatly. To get these points across to large numbers his team created what is called the Broken Forest Tour at the Kanthavara Forest Basecamp. Visitors, mainly students, educationists and families sit on the same fallen tree trunks, and ponder over these findings. Many are deeply moved by the sight of the broken forest and have gone on to spread the word. His words highlight both the urgency of preservation of forests and the responsibility of future generations Mr Arun Shenoy is an environmental educator and conservation activist. He established
“Kanthavara”, a forest base camp and training centre and a hub for conservation and education,
following his encounter with a tree-poaching incident in the forested area nearby. Here, he conducts
forest walk programmes, study tours, sessions on the ‘Broken Forest’ segment, Seed ball making and
bamboo in construction and design study. Around fifty such camps have been held in the past two
years. Through the activities at Kanthavara, he has effectively demonstrated the impact of
unchecked human intervention on forest ecosystems, sensitised the public on the after-effects of
forest encroachment, the possible threats to wildlife caused by human activities, and methods to
prevent forest fires and protect forest borders. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

- 13:02Earth: A Unique Habitat in the Cosmos | Giovanni Covone | TEDxUNINA Federico IIAre we alone in the universe? Astrophysicist Giovanni Covone explores the delicate bond between life and the stars, from ancient myths to modern discoveries of exoplanets. He reveals why Earth may be both ordinary and extraordinar— a fragile, unique home in the vast cosmos. Giovanni Covone is an astrophysicist working in the fields of exoplanets and observational cosmology. In particular he is interested in searching Earth-like planets, the study of the astrophysical conditions for life in the Universe and understanding the riddle of dark matter by means of astrophysical observations. He is an active science communicator and an author. He is also interested in the dialogue between physicists and philosophers, in their common effort to understand the external world and our role within as a species. - 13:53Investing in our planet's future | Carla Guerriero | TEDxUNINA Federico IIWhat if economics could be our strongest weapon against climate change? In this talk, economist Carla Guerriero shows how pricing pollution, reshaping markets, and changing incentives can drive real solutions. From energy to industry to food, she explains how the right economic choices today can secure a livable planet for tomorrow. Carla is an Associate Professor of Public Economics at the University of Naples Federico II. Her research explores the intersections between the environment—particularly climate change—health, and economics. Carla’s research specializes in health economics and the interdisciplinary study of environmental health interventions. Her book project focuses on the methodology for conducting cost-benefit analyses of such interventions, integrating insights from economics, public health, and environmental science. Her work explores the economic incentives for addressing environmental degradation and climate change, with a particular emphasis on their impacts on human health. Carla also investigates the dynamics of patient mobility and healthcare quality, with a focus on the Italian healthcare system. Her most recent ongoing research examines the promotion of sustainable and healthy diets for children and the economic implications of fast fashion.
