Informative Pasts, Sustainable Futures: Archaeology, Heritage and AI | Gai Jorayev | TEDxUIC

The fields of heritage and archaeology have effectively embraced advances in machine learning, modeling, and various elements of AI. However, a critical question remains: how can we use the past to create a sustainable future in the age of AI? Inspired by the idea of crossroads and designed to be thought-provoking, this talk explores the possibility of leveraging knowledge about the past—with the help of machines—to ensure subsistence and survivability. Gai Jorayev is an academic with interests in heritage management, cultural tourism, and digital humanities. He works at the intersection of heritage—in its various forms—and digital tools and technologies. In addition to working with archaeological sites, industrial heritage, and rural and cultural landscapes, Gai’s research also explores the history and heritage of space exploration and Earth observation. He is actively involved in heritage-based development initiatives and contributes to capacity-building efforts around the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
