Stories From the Stones | Megan Barnes | TEDxClinton Central School
What if the quietest places in our towns held the loudest lessons?
In this moving and deeply personal talk, Megan Barnes invites us on a journey that begins in an old cemetery—and leads to a powerful revelation about legacy, memory, and the people who shaped the very ground we walk on.
While exploring headstones and histories, one name stood out: Myrtilla Miner. A forgotten educator who defied the norms of her time.
Through Myrtilla’s life, and the lives of countless others buried beneath our feet, Megan reminds us that everyone has a story worth telling, and that the best way to honor the past is to live a life worth remembering.
“Live like someone is going to tell your story someday.” Megan Barnes never expected to go viral when she started cleaning headstones in Central New York’s cemeteries, but her passion for preservation has now introduced millions of people to the forgotten histories of surrounding tiny towns. An Earth Science teacher at Madison Central School, Megan began documenting her work—restoring graves and uncovering the stories behind them—on TikTok. What started as a small project quickly gained traction, with her most-watched video surpassing 20 million views.Using meticulous research and careful restoration techniques, Megan has revitalized nearly 500 headstones, ensuring that the early settlers and everyday people who shaped her community are not lost to time. Her work not only honors the past but also sparks conversations about history, memory, and the way we care for those who came before us. - 6:00Designed to Distract: The War on Your Attention | Kaan Gölcükçü | TEDxYaşamTasarımSchoolsThis TEDx talk by Kaan challenges the idea that we have short attention spans, arguing instead that our focus is being deliberately hijacked by a system designed to manipulate and monetize our time. Through humor and sharp critique, he explains how digital platforms shape not just our habits, but our identities. Rather than advocating for a tech-free life, Kaan offers practical tools—like digital consent, notification fasting, and embracing boredom—to help us regain control. The central message: focus is no longer just discipline; it’s a radical act of resistance in a world designed to distract us. Kaan Gölcükçü has achieved several victories in school contests such as football, dodgeball, and basketball. He can play the piano by ear. He has a deep interest in cinema and possesses incredible knowledge about filmmaking. He speaks English fluently. Last year, he took part in the Alanya Municipality Theatre’s play. - 4:42K-pop, culture, and the power of naming | Chuxuan Li | TEDxMyddelton College Jinhua YouthWhen the view count of Chinese pop music MVs on YouTube hits 200 million, contrasting sharply with K-pop's 2.3 billion; when traditional elements like Chinese knots are misread as "Korean aesthetics" in K-pop, have we realized that this is not just a gap in numbers, but a silent contest of cultural discourse? In this global cultural collision, only by strengthening the understanding of cultural roots and actively spreading Chinese pop culture can we make the charm of the East shine uniquely on the world stage. Harmony in diversity and beauty in coexistence – this is the ideal vision of multicultural exchange. Li Chuxuan (Leo), a year 12 student from Myddleton College Jinhua. As a K-POP enthusiast, today he wants to take everyone to observe cultural collisions through the details of MVs – when Chinese knots appear on K-pop group stages, should we feel proud or be meticulous about the cultural origin?
